…Or You Can Drive!!

This is a legitimate commercial for Schindel Insurance running on TV stations in Indianapolis. I looked for it for months, and finally found it on the Interwebs.

There’s too much awesomeness packed into 30 seconds for me to select one favorite moment. But when he says “put that in your pipe and smoke it” after cracking the whip & commanding his employees/friends/paid actors to “DANCE” might be mine.

Joaquin Stiller Chews Gum At Oscars

I’m still not sure if the whole bearded, rapping Joaquin is an Andy-Kaufman-like stunt, or if he’s really that far gone.

If you somehow missed the interview that spawned this spoof, see below:

DOOM – “That’s That” (off BORN LIKE THIS)

New DOOM (No MF) from his first studio album in a few years, titled BORN LIKE THIS.  It’s slated for a 3/24 release on UK-based Lex Records. I love that he has a song called “Batty Boys”, easily one of my favorite British slang terms.

Here’s two tracks to tide you over for 30 days.

Video: Jay Smooth – Monkeys and Trolls

Jay Smooth writes:

By request, a little something about the New York Post chimp (which is of course an ape not a monkey but the cartoonist must not have known that) cartoon.

Click here for info on the cat story I mentioned…I don’t recommend watching the actual video but the story does have a happy ending.

(recorded on Wednesday, hence usage of the word “today.”)

(Official) Video: KiD CuDi – Day N Nite

Directed by French artist So Me, who did Kanye’s Good Life. This is one of the most creative music videos I’ve seen in a long time, which does the song justice.

(And I’m fully aware that I have a boulder-sized “this has been my ringtone since last summer” chip on my shoulder for anyone who’s new to this song)

In these tough economic times, all I can ask is, “Where is Ja?!”

Remember getting these in a forwarded email 3-4 years ago? So cool.

The artist’s name is Julian Beaver.

Kenna – Make Sure They See My Face

I’ve been listening to this album a lot the past week. Trav P wrote about it back in March 2008 on Victory Is In My Clutches (RIP):

Another highlight of the trip was my predeparture itunes purchase. I’d been debating whether to download Make Sure They See My Face by Kenna for several months – I just couldn’t decide if I was into the “pseudo-emo/soul” vibe that Pharrell is now championing. But I am definitely pleased with the album – it has an N.E.R.D. feel to it, but with more of an electro-soul sound and less rock; plus Kenna’s vocals are much better than Pharrell’s. Suprisingly, for a Neptunes production, Skateboard P makes no cameos.

Kenna was a 2009 Grammy nominee, was featured in Malcom Gladwell’s 2005 book Blink (the book I have in both soft and hard cover, yet still have only read 50%), had a song on FIFA ’08, … and likes to climb tall mountains.  In a 2007 interview with VIBE, Kenna said:

I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro – that kind of kicked off the album because it’s a metaphor for my life. I reached 18,200 feet, got sick and had to come back down… for a week after I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, Pharrell called me everyday like [in a whispering Pharrell voice] “Yo, man, are you going make sure they see your face?

My favorite song off the album, hands down, is “Static”, and the video for “Out of Control” (song on FIFA ’08) is well worth three minutes of your time.

Video: Kanye West ft. Kid Cudi – “Welcome To Heartbreak”

Very cool video treatment for “Welcome To Heartbreak” (want to see it in HD). Definitely one of my favorite tracks off 808′s. Cudi kills it on the chorus… and he can’t be too upset that this video was released early, the same week the video for “Day N’ Night” premiers.

Via Kanye’s blog:

This is not the next single, “Amazing” is the next single.

This is the video we’ve been working on for the last month.

We know there is another video out there using the same technique so we were forced to drop it now.

Video: Kris Kross – I Missed The Bus (1992)

Mr. Gripples and I were talking today, and he said he can still recite the whole first verse of this song (prooooove iiiiit). I remember this cassette being my pre-soccer “get pumped” music back in the day, and this was one of my fav’s.

There’s some unflattering pics of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly that recently surfaced over at Concrete Loop. As a bald man of almost 7 years, I want to donate a Head Blade to him. I understand it’s not his fault, but you’ve got to wear a hat or shave those loose hairs, man.  Going out like that (and with pants still backwards) “is something you should never, ever, ever do again”

Blu – HerFavoriteColo(u)r (mixtape)

Blu is one of my favorite new MC’s, and it took me a while to warm up to him. Travis put me on to Beneath The Heavens… last year, and I’d downloaded the Johnson & Johnson project, but not until recently did I really give him a thorough listen. The guy talks some good talk. Haven’t listened to any of this yet, but I hear it’s half-instrumental, and carries the vibe of a jam session. **EDIT** I’ve listened, and it’s short (30 minutes), and incredible. Click below, and get right. This is why I like Blu.

Video: MIMS – “Move (If You Wanna)”

This song is my guilty pleasure for 2009.

First heard it with Kinetik a few weeks ago after eating at the new Scotty’s Brewhouse downtown. The beat is what caught my attention, and according to FSD, it’s produced by Chicago Natives, Da Internz.

The video is extra good. Mims is trying to make me a believer, but I always think of this:

Consequence & Kid Cudi – Buggin’ Out 2009 (Video Promo)

Still shot of Kid Cudi, Plain Pat & Consequence in the video for "Buggin Out 09"

Still shot of Kid Cudi, Plain Pat & Consequence in the video for "Buggin Out 09"

The picture says 1,000 words (…plus text that says “Buggin Out 09″). Cudi, Cons, Plain Pat & Rik Cordero talk about how the song came together on set for the  “Buggin Out 2009″ video, and how Cudi “couldn’t remember the joint.”

Now, I consider myself a casual Tribe fan.  I know the essentials, own a couple CD’s, but would never go toe-to-toe with someone on song titles, discography timeline, etc.  I’m also a huge Cudi fan…. So I say this “with all due respect” (the time-honored, passive-agressive phrase), but how did Cudi know the song, but not the title?  The chorus is “buggin out, buggin out, buggin out, you’re buggin out”?!?  That seems almost impossible.  Watch closely, and you’ll see Cons raise his eyes up in a bit of a blank stare.

…. Or maybe I’m just muckraking for no reason.  No need for another Fiascogate with a talented artist.  This is a great re-make, and I should be celebrating the positivity of Consequence and Cudi jumping on a Tribe tribute together, after their short-lived Youtube misunderstanding (thankfully, Cons didn’t go visit Cudder’s mother, like other rappers)

“A few new stations, put me in rotation
they’ve embraced the martian… congratulations.”

J. Period & Q-Tip – The [Abstract] Best: Volume One

Not sure how I missed this all over the blogs a few days ago. Anyhow, here is the anticipated Q-Tip tribute from J. Period – The [Abstract] Best featuring new music from De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, ?uestlove, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Consequence, Zion I, Skillz, Black Sheep, Kid Cudi, and Blu.

“.. And No Haters, Please”

You may have seen the nerdy Canadian kid Pruane2Forever by now, but if not, get familiar. I couldn’t help but heed his advice to subscribe (especially since I’m not a hater). See his thoughts on some current artists in the news. Oh, and if you have something to say about his braces, you’d better watch this.

Are YOU down with N.A.P.?  Drew, aka Mr. Exclusive, from Fake Shore Drive, has blessed me with this classic 1996 album from Indianapolis rap group, N.A.P. I didn’t live in the Indy area until around 2001, so I have no recollection of these guys. But Drew (who grew up in Indiana) said this record had “a buzz bigger than insects in Texas” (© ‘Ye) in the mid-90′s. Continue reading ‘N.A.P. – Straight Out The Nappy City (1996)’

Lance Moore #3, Top Ten WR Free-Agents

The Sporting News released their list of Top Ten Free-Agent Wide Receivers last week. L-Meezy shows up at the #3 spot behind T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Antonio Bryant. Not mad at that…

Here’s what they said about Moore:

3. Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints
Injuries to Saints receivers thrust Moore into a starting role, and he responded to the challenge in fine fashion. He had 10 games with at least five catches and produced three 100-yard games. His quickness and burst make him a perfect fit for the Saints’ quick-hitting passing attack, so he could thrive in places like Arizona or New England where he could get the ball in his hands quickly and have an opportunity to work in space. He’s a talented player who can have an impact, despite his lack of size.

People are always hating on his size, but hasn’t let it get in his way since high school. And if you saw his London soccer slide, you know his TD celebrations will be talked about even more in ’09. Hard-working, talented, AND knows how to work the crowd.

**Bonus video: Moore getting busy on MNF vs. Green Bay (2 TD’s, 115 yds. I was at this game, and it was an amazing display by Westerville’s finest)

Bo Burnham > Asher Roth

If you haven’t seen it yet, go check out the video for Asher Roth – “I Love College”. The video definitely adds to the song, but I’m still indifferent on Asher. Yes, he’s lyrically talented, has catchy catchphrases (“I’m nice right now”), huge cross-over/college appeal, and a cameo from Chuck & Mikey from the Cool Kids. All that aside, some of his interviews annoy me, and I can’t quite get past the gimmick, for better or worse.

For my money? I’ll take 18-yr-old Bo Burnham over Asher any day. Sure Bo’s a comedian, but he’s also “the greatest rappa eva… who can really find your G spot.” Just discovered his video over the weekend, and gave myself a Super Duper Late Pass since the video “I’m Bo Yo.” has 6+ million views on Youtube.
