This American Life – Weiner Circle (Chicago)

One of the first times I ever went to Chicago, I had some drunk friends that said we should go to the Weiner’s Circle to get late night food. With no warning of what this place was, I was so confused when the staff was yelling at customers. And when I paid, they took two dollars out of my change and “tipped the bucket”. When I objected, the main woman in the video said, “everyone tips the bucket, mutha fucka”. It was a funny story to tell people, but I won’t say it was an enjoyable experience…. mainly because of what I saw it bring out in the people ordering food.

Later, I found out that this was what the Weiner’s Circle was famous for. After watching this video from Ira Glass, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. It definitely does not surprise me that racial lines get crossed here every weekend. Where does the line of good-hearted banter, cursing and insults cross over to ignorant racial slurs?

Great post. I’m glad I stumbled upon this video tonight. I have also thought of the Weiners Circle as a terrible place, drenched in racial stereptypes, stratification, and ethnic roles. Lincoln Park is a complex place, that is overshadowed, and frankly, ruined by idiots who come from the suburbs and small homogenous towns. They make it embarassing for others and one of the most plastic areas of Chicago. It is a shame because it is a beautiful neighborhood as well, filled with parks, the lakefront, a tremendous zoo, and great record stores, and independent restaurants/businesses. This video sums up a lot of my feelings towards the Weiner’s Circle, Ira Glass did an excellent job.

“Tip my bucket mutha’ fucka'”…. hahahahaha, will never forget that, first experience like 3 or 4 years ago, still a classic. What a place. And a perfect segment on “This American Life.”

Anything over 2 months old is fair game in the blogosphere.
