Slomo x San Diego, CA

I haven’t smiled this big from a story in a long time. Just got off the phone with a good friend from college who I haven’t talked to an almost a year. She’s living out in San Diego, and has a place that faces the Pacific Beach boardwalk in a prime people watching location (while I look at half-plowed, snow-covered Indiana streets… !).

As we’re talking, I hear classical music in the background, and she says “Hear that? It’s Slomo..”, explaining to me that he’s a San Diego legend. He’s always on the boardwalk in his blue tank top, iPod playing classical music out of attached speakers, and roller blading… in slow motion. She said there’s other wannabe characters, but no one’s as loved as Slomo (whose real name is Dr. John Kitchin, a former neurologist.)

After Googling “Slomo San Diego” and watching a few videos, I am obsessed with this dude. In almost every Youtube video, the person taping it is just geeked to be filming him. He’s constantly high-fiving people who recognize him, skating by in “the Zone”, which he describes in an interview with the San Diego Union Tribune:

“I want to think about eternal questions in the state of mind I call the Zone,” Kitchin says. “Slomo is an entity, a person, who lives in the Zone, purely subjective in nature.”

Here’s a short clip of him on the boardwalk:

And another (I like this guy’s “whoo hooo” at the end)

This one’s a bit longer, but so worth it. A guy (who has an awesome laugh) and his daughter follow Slomo for 8 minutes, and talk to him a couple times throughout.

You can learn more about him at, and watch Quicktime videos of him skating (I recommend “Slomo Drinking Gatorade” — why he doesn’t have an endorsement deal is beyond me). He’s also got original songs where he tells stories over abstract, space sounds.  It doesn’t look like the site’s been updated much since 2005, but he’s still out cruising in the Zone. He definitely has some Dude-like qualities, which I respect. Slomo abides.
