NBA’s New Taxi Ads With Rainn Wilson, Look Familiar?

(Jimmy the cab driver, circa 1993)

When I first saw the new NBA commercials featuring Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office) as a crazy cab driver with different NBA players in the back, I thought they were hilarious.  Then I realized it reminded me of a similar ad campaign from the 90’s… which I automatically assumed was from the NBA, and they had just re-worked it.

Thanks to The Google, my memory became more accurate.  The ads weren’t from the NBA, they were from MTV.  The character of ‘Jimmy the cab driver’ was a household name and commercial in the 1990’s, played by actor Donal Logue.  Classic commercials that everyone born before ’84 should remember.

So, what is it….. a blatant rip-off, or a clever homage to a childhood hero, Jimmy the cab driver?

Jay Smooth writes:

Working my way back to hip-hop topics, and LJ is down with the ROC so this gets me halfway there. The target of his tweet epithets (twepithets? ok maybe not) posted quite a thoughtful response on his blog, which I might come back to later.

Video: CRAZY Trick Basketball Shots

Insane. Thanks to J.Z. for the link. Apparently Shaq saw this and bet the kid $1,000 in a game of horse.

Leroy Smith – Get Your Basketball On

The Grip posted this, and I thought it was so funny, I immediately posted a link to it on Twitter.  Less than 5 minutes later, @TheLeroyBrown was following me on Twitter.  That’s brilliant, and reason enough to re-post the video.  But first, a few words from Leroy:

“In tenth grade, I beat out MJ for the last spot on our varsity basketball team, igniting a fire that inspired him to greatness. Since then I have motivized countless people with my inspirational DVD series and workshops. Now, with the launch of my revolutionary website, I’m finally able to motivate the world, including Canada.”

Best Reaction to Lebron’s Game Winner: Darnell Jackson?

The Shot Heard Round The World. You’ve all seen or heard about the Lebron game winner against the Magic in Game 2 last night. But you may not have heard of the Best Reaction Award. It goes to….

…a dude on the Cavs bench, who I’m 99% sure is Darnell Jackson (pictured above). Fast forward to the 1:58 mark. I’ll quote Mr. Berger who said,

“he gives it the fingers-in-the-cookie-jar then just strolls out on the court like it was all planned.”

Someone identify this man, ever so cool. Is it Jackson? I’ve got Jose3030 working on a gif (crossing fingers)….

Lebron: “Wind Chill, A Little Bit Minus”

The Grip says:

LeBron is arguably the best bastetball player in the world, but remember, he did skip college. Trajectory sounds a lot like projectory.
